Abstract
1,218,791. Automatic roll wrapping. REICHEL & DREWS Inc. 12 Aug., 1968 [15 Aug., 1967], No.38556/68. Heading B8C. General machine operation.-In apparatus for the wrapping with adhesively attached paper of a roll 168 of relatively stiff material, e.g. roofing paper, as the roll 168 is rotated by a driven 170 and a supporting idler roller 172, an outwardly projecting end flap 180 of the roll 168 actuates, via an arm 182, a sensor switch 188 controlling, through a delay timer, the delivery of a length 110 of wrapping paper to the nip of roll 168 and roller 170, whereby an end portion 114 of the section 110 is attached, by adhesive 130, to a portion 190 of the roll 168 sufficiently spaced from the end 198 of the flap 180 to avoid detachment by the resiliency of the flap 180. Roll supply.-The rollers 170, 172 are automatically supplied with rolls 168, from an inclined storage ramp 26 leading from a conveyer, by an intermittently actuated vertical conveyer 150 comprising three pairs of spaced roll-engaging arms 152, 154 and 156 projecting from conveyer chains and which raise the rolls 168 to an inclined track 167 by which they are delivered to the rollers 170, 172, and centered with respect thereto by converging side roller tracks 167 which act to displace a roll 168 across rollers extending longitudinally of the inclined track. The vertical conveyer 150 is intermittently driven by a motor which simultaneously drives a crank 204 carrying the idler roller 172 whereby, as a roll 168 is being raised, the roller 172 is displaced away from and then returned towards the roller 170 to permit a wrapped roll 168 to fall on to a conveyer 40. The action of the motor driving the conveyer 150 and crank 204 is initiated, through a switch (266), Fig. 2 (not shown), actuated by the presence of a roll 168 on the ramp 26, by a timer permitting sufficient delay for completion of the wrapping of a roll 168 and the action of which is initiated by a cam on the arm 208 of the crank 204, when in the returned position of the roller 172. Wrapping paper supply and preparation.- The wrapping paper is supplied to the nip of roll 168 and roller 170 by an intermittently actuated conveyer 60, comprising a plurality of lower driven belts 62 with the outer belts of which co-operate a pair of upper belts 68, the belts 60, 62 being supplied by a simultaneously intermittently actuated drive roller 48 which draws a continuous length 112 of paper through idler rollers 56, from a roll thereof which is braked by a weight loaded friction band. The continuous length of paper 112 is cut into wrapping sections 110 by a knife assembly 80, a blade (82) whereof, Figs. 2 and 5 (not shown), is spring-urged against a fixed blade (84) into cutting co-operation with which it is vertically reciprocated by an air cylinder to produce spaced cuts 108 across the paper 112. Spaced blobs of adhesive 130, for attachment to the roll 168, are applied to the leading end 114 of each section 110 by pressure nozzles 116, and a continuous strip of adhesive 144 is applied to the trailing end 138, for the attachment thereof over the leading end 114, by a pair of spaced nozzles 134, 136 which each apply half the strip 144 as they are reciprocated together, alternately in different directions across succeeding sections 110 by a pneumatic cylinder assembly. The knife assembly 80 and the application of adhesive by nozzles 116 and 134,136 is initiated by a limit switch (280) which is operated by a roll 168 descendng the inclined track 167. When the intermittent drive to the belts 62 and roller 48 is initiated from the sensor 188 through the delay timer, a section 110 engaged between the nip of a roll 168 and roller 170 is then drawn at a faster rate then delivered by the belts 62 whereby it is torn from a succeeding section at the perforations 108, the drive to the belts 62 and roller 48 being halted when an index mark 372 on the paper, and determining the length of a section 110, is detected by a photo-electric scanner unit 370. The machine operates automatically through an electrical control circuit, the actuation whereof is indicated by an indicator light. It is stated that the roll 168 may alternately be wrapped entirely or part way therearound by narrower bands of material at a plurality of locations.
