Abstract

698,985. Aerial coupling arrangements. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 30, 1952 [July 24, 1951], No. 17527/51. Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vii). In a radio aerial comprising a primary element fed from a transmission line and associated with a reflector or a lens for producing a desired directivity pattern, the production of standing waves in the transmission line by reflection of energy from the reflector or lens back into the transmission line is reduced by the provision of a further length of transmission line producing reflections which are in anti-phase with those from the lens or reflector. The aerial comprises a " cheese " reflector 1 associated with a wave-guide horn 3 coupled to the transmitter by means of a wave-guide 4. A length of auxiliary wave-guide 5, terminated by an adjustable reflecting plunger 7 is coupled by means of a directional coupler 6, incorporating a matched termination 8 to the waveguide 4, the length of the guide 5 and the coupling between the guides 4 and 3 being so chosen that the energy reflected from the plunger 7 cancels that reflected from the reflector 1 back into the wave-guide 4. Where it is difficult to achieve exactly the desired coupling factor between the guides 4 and 5, excessive coupling may be provided and this compensated for by the insertion of an attenuator into the wave-guide 5.
