Abstract

Articles such as filaments, threads and fabrics of acrylonitrile polymers or copolymers are dyed by treating them successively in two baths, the first containing both the coupling component and non-diazotized base, and the second containing nitrous acid. The temperature of the first bath may be from 80 DEG to 100 DEG C. and of the second, from 40 DEG to 70 DEG C. In examples: (1) polyacrylonitrile thread is treated firstly in a bath containing b -naphthol, o-aminoazotoluene, an amide of a sulphonated aminoalcohol, caustic soda and sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphonate, and then in a bath containing sodium nitrite, sulphuric acid and sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphonate; in subsequent examples the following alternative first bath is used; (2) a -naphthalide of 2,3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, p-nitro-o-anisidine and caustic soda; (3) b -naphthol, p-nitraniline and caustic soda; and (4) b -naphthol, a -naphthylamine and caustic soda.
