Abstract

697,864. Clocks and watches. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. March 13, 1952 [March 22, 1951], No. 6860/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 139 [Also in Group XXXII] A hair spring is of material of uniform cross section, and is of spiral form except for an outer terminal portion, which is joined tangentially to the spiral portion, and is of material of at least twice the thickness of that of the spiral portion, and is so shaped and arranged in the plane of the spiral that there is no sinusoidal departure from proportionality between deflection and torque of the spring. The end of the terminal portion is encasted. The terminal portion is preferably in the form of a circular arc having its centre at the centre of the spiral portion, and is of uniform cross-section. The increased stiffness may be obtained by plating the end of a conventional spring, or by joining to such end an additional strip. Alternatively, it may be obtained in the process. of rolling a spring, by increasing the distance apart of the rollers. Formulae are derived in the specification relating to the radii of the terminal and spiral portions of the spring (in equilibrium position), the stiffnesses of these portions, and the angle subtended at the centre of the arc formed by the terminal portion. A spring of beryllium copper according to the invention is described in the Provisional Specification as applied to a tachometer.
