Abstract
697,813. Converting. BRITISH ELECTRICAL & ALLIED INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 12. 1952 [March 22, 1951No. 6917/51. Class 38 (ii). In a D.C. power transmission system which is fed from A.C. line 11 through a rectifying arrangement which may comprise mercury vapour converters 1-6 connected in double three phase bridge arrangement between D.C. line 16 and earthed centre point 19 and a similar arrangement (not shown) between the centre point and the other D.C. line, and which feeds an inverter arrangement at the distant end, a sudden rise of line current is arranged to block the rectifier grids. Sudden rise of current induces a voltage across the smoothing choke 40 and in a winding 42 coupled thereto, and closes a relay VR the coil of which is connected across a potentiometer 46 supplied from winding 42 through a filter 43, 44 which blocks normal ripple. The coil of main relay MR, which is in series with the contacts of relay VR, and the normally-closed contacts of timing relay TR and (52) of anti-hunt relay AH across D.C. supply 47, is energized and closes contacts 48, 50, 49, respectively, to block the rectifier grids to complete a holding circuit for relay MR excluding the contacts of relay VR, and to energize relays TR and AH. Relay TR opens after a set delay to de-energize relay MR and allow the rectifier grids to refire. While the voltage across reactor 40 persists relay MR recloses and the cycle is repeated, until after a predetermined number of operations relay AH operates closing hold in contacts 53 and opening contacts 52 to break the supply to relay MR permanently until reset switch 54 is opened. In a modification, relay VR is replaced by a triode which is fired by a voltage on its grid derived from a transformer across the smoothing choke, whereby one resis. tance is shunted to develop voltage across another. This voltage may be used to block a firing valve in the control unit 25 for the grids of the mercury vapour rectifiers. Specification 698,438 is referred to.
