A capstan construction for use in wire-drawing machines having a driven shaft, includes a pair of bearing rings mounted on the shaft, having oppositely directed annular conical bearing faces, and a wearing ring mounted between said faces and having a portion substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft and bevelled corners on the outside cooperating with and matching said faces to form bearing surfaces of relatively small area in contact with the bearing rings to allow slip of the capstans. Belt-driven shafts 12, 13 carry a number of capstans 32-36, 42-16, which comprise split wearing-rings held between elements such as 70-75 having inclined bearing surfaces 84, 85, Fig. 4, which are keyed to the driving-shaft. The conical bearing surfaces 82, 83, Fig. 4, may be formed separately and keyed to the body of the respective element 80, 81. Each shaft is fitted with a fixed block, 37, 47, at the finishing end. Wire 50 passes over the first capstan 42, through die 60 to capstan 32, back through a die in a lower bank, Fig. 2 (not shown), to capstan 43, back through die 61 to capstan 33 and so on. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), dies and drawing capstans are arranged in alignment, the capstans being driven through bevel gearing from a main drive shaft.
