Abstract

697,359. Electrostatic precipitation. WHESSOE, Ltd., and PUTNAM, W. E. June 30, 1952 [July 4, 1951], No. 15883/51. Class 39(i) An arrangement for cleaning the discharge electrodes of a precipitator comprises vibrating or rapping means mounted on the high tension electrode system and means mounted on the earthed part of the apparatus for delivering a jet of compressed air or gas to drive said vibrating or rapping means, In the embodiment shown, a framework 3 from which the discharge electrodes (not shown) are suspended carries a sleeve 4 through which passes a rod 5 carrying a hammer block 6 and an inverted cup 7. A jet nozzle 8 is connected through a pipe 9 provided with a control valve 10 to a source of compressed air. The control valve 10 is connected to a lever system 11 which may be operated manually or by automatic means such as a cam mechanism to open the valve so that a jet of air is directed into the cup 7 and the hammer head 6 is raised. When the valve is closed the air supply is cut off and the hammer head falls and strikes the end of the sleeve 4. The nozzle 8 is spaced a sufficient distance from the cup 7 to prevent flash over without the use of any insulating materials, or alternatively the nozzle 8 and end portion of the pipe 9 may be made of insulating material. In a modified construction, a hammer block is carried at one end of a horizontal lever pivotally mounted on the framework 3, an air jet nozzle being directed downwardly into a cup carried at the other end of the lever.
