697,110. Making variegated plastic sheet material. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. Nov. 22, 1950 [Nov. 26, 1949; Nov. 26, 1949], No. 28540/50. Class 87 (ii) A sheet is formed from a plastic base and a plastic mottling colour composition, the sheet is cut into rods, and the rods are fed to rolls where they are coalesced and rolled into sheet form; this second sheet may be reduced in thickness by rolling. The plastic base may be linoleum composition, asphalt, "Vinylite" (R.T.M.) or rubber. Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate a method in which the material is fed from a hopper 4 and sheeted between hot rolls 5, 6. The sheets 9 formed on the cooler roll 6 are cut from the roll by doctor blade 7 and drop on to conveyer 8. The mottling colour composition is arranged in a series of jaspe lines, each line extending across the width of the sheet. The conveyer 8 takes the sheets through a slitting device 11, which cuts each sheet into longitudinal strips, and a cutter 12 which cuts the strips transversely to form rods 13 of a size, e.g. 3 x 0.25 x 0.25 inches. The rods fall into a hopper 14 and thence, haphazardly arranged, between sheeting rollers 15. In a modified procedure (not illustrated) the jaspe lines of colour may run diagonally. Fig. 3 (plan view) illustrates another method, in which sheets 20 are arranged in overlapping relationship on a conveyer 19 with the jaspe lines extending transversely. The sheets are cut once only, transversely, to form long rods 23 of, say, 0.25 x 0.25 inch section and the rods fall into sheeting rolls 25 with their axes parallel to the roll axes. The rod axes may not be parallel to the axes, and the rods may be bunched in masses by hand and dropped into the rolls. U.S.A. Specification 1,939,045 is referred to.
