Description

A. A. GODFREY MANUFACTURE OF LINOLEUM Filed Oct. 26, 1922 llllllllllllllllllllllll I! Patented Aug. 26, 1924.
UNITED STATES ALFRED ARTHUR GODFREY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
MANUFACTURE OF LINOLEUM.
Application filed October 26, 1922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED ARTHUR GODFREY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 6 Old Bailey, London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Linoleum, of which the -following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of linoleum and its object is the production of sheets of linoleum in which two or more colours are blended to produce a broken or clouded efiect.
According to this invention I mix granulated linoleum material of. two or more colours and roll it into a sheet which has a grained appearance. I then cut this sheet into strips or lengths and lay a number of the strips one upon another to form a pile, and I then roll this pile in a direction approximately at right angles to that of the first rolling, in other words, the strips are rolled across the grain. The sheet so formed is cut into strips which either singly or a number placed one above the other are again rolled in a direction across the grain. Thus I produce a sheet having a broken or clouded effect and free from lines or grain.
The process may be repeated if desired.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 of which is a plan of the sheet formed by the first rolling, Figure 2 the first mentioned pile, Figure 3 a plan of the sheet formed by the second rolling and Figure 4 the pile second mentioned.
In Figure 1, A is the sheet which has been formed by the first rolling, the direction of passage through the rolls being shown by the arrow B; this sheet is divided into strips by cutting it along the dotted lines C, C, some of these strips are laid one above the Serial No. 597,033.
other to form the pile shown in end elevation in Figure 2. This pile is then passed in the direction indicated by the arrow D through rolls to produce the sheet shown in Figure 3, this is again divided into lengths by cutting it along the dotted lines E, E. Figure t shows two of such strips placed one above the other; these are then passed through rolls in the direction of the arrow F to produce the final sheet.
What I claim is 1. The production of a sheet 01": linoleum having a broken or clouded effect by mi):- ing granulated material or" different colours, rolling the material into a sheet, cut ting the sheet into strips, laying a number of these strips one upon another to form a pile, rolling this pile in a direction approximately at right angles to that of the first rolling, cutting the sheet so formed into strips and rolling these strips again in a direction ap proximately at right angles to that of the first rolling.
2. The production of a sheet of linoleum having a broken or clouded effect by mixing granulated material of different colors, rollmg the material into a sheet, cutting the sheet into strips, laying a number of these strips in overlapping relation, rolling in a direction approximately at right angles to that of the first rolling, cutting the sheet so formed into strips, laying a number of these strips in overlapping relation, and rolling these strips again in a direction approxi mately at right angles to that of the first rolling.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name this 17th day of October, 1922.
ALFRED ARTHUR- GODFREY.
