695,645. Gates. SLADE, R. E. Nov. 20, 1951 [Dec. 9, 1950], No. 30179/50. Class 45 [Also in Group XXV] A gate comprises four uprights 15-18, four cross-members 13, 14, 19, 20 and a capped tube 1-0 adapted to be seated over an upstanding post 23, the inner face of the tube cap 11 forming with the top of the post a bearing surface for supporting the weight of the gate, the inner surface of the tube wall forming with the outer surface of the post a bearing surface to resist sagging, and the cross-members being arranged in pairs on each side of the capped tube to which they are permanently secured to form a beam free to rotate about the post 23 with one arm of the beam shorter than the other and loaded as a counter-weight for the other arm. The short arm is loaded by a weight 21 which can be positioned in one of a number of holes 22 in the member 20. A loose plate smeared with lubricant is positioned between the top of the post 23 and the inside of the cap 11. Chestnut palings or wire netting may be secured to the uprights.
