Abstract

695,640. Making heat-exchangers. RICHINGS, J. W. Aug. 10, 1951 [Aug. 10, 1950], No. 19877/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Stamping; welding.-A process for making hollow sheet-metal structures, e.g. heat-exchangers, comprises applying welding pressure by means of a pair of cooperating dies to selected registering areas of the outer faces of two sheets placed between the dies so as simultaneously to weld the margins of the sheets together to render the space between the sheets fluid-tight and also to weld the sheets together inwards of the outer marginal seam to define the internal configuration of the structure and applying fluid pressure between the sheets to expand portions against which said welding pressure is not applied, the degree of expansion being controlled by cavities in the said co-operating dies. Apparatus for carrying out the invention comprises a pair of dies 10 and 11 and a nozzle 12 for injecting pressure fluid preferably air or other gas from a flexible pipe-line 13. A seating 16 and 17 of resilient material is interposed between the dies and their carrying members 14 and 15 of the press. The lower die 11 has pressure-plates 18 for limiting the inward travel of the dies and the dies are located laterally by dowels 19 and bushings 20. The metal sheets 25 and 26 are located between the dies by cylindrical posts 21 having conical outer ends 22 and rectangular posts 23. Each of the dies is provided with cavities 27 and raised portions 28 and 29. The nozzle 12 has a portion 30 of elliptical cross-section for withstanding the lateral pressure of the dies and initiates expansion of the metal sheets. The pressure-fluid passes through passageways 31 and 32 in the nozzle and a flange 33 seated in a recess in the dies retains the nozzle in position. The plates may be of aluminium or copper alloys or sheet steel and the dies may be heated by electric heating elements placed in passageways, 34 or by a heating medium passing through these passageways. The welding may either be effected simultaneously with the expansion of the sheets into the die cavities 27 or prior to the introduction of the pressure fluid to effect such expansion. Specification 695,628, [Group XIII], is referred to.
