Abstract

695,586. Respiratory appliances. BLEASE, J. H. Feb. 13, 1952 [Feb. 16, 1951], No. 3352/51 Class 81 (ii). Respiration or anµsthetic apparatus, in which a rebreathing bag is employed, is provided with indicating means secured to a movable portion of the bag co-operating with at least one measuring device adjacent the bag. A concertinalike collapsable cylindrical breathing bag 14 is secured to a plate 17 forming the top of an air chamber 4 surrounding the bag 14. The bag 14 receives gas from and discharges gas to the patients'. lungs by way of a valve 3, the air chamber 4 being connected with a supply of compressed air. An indicator 15 and rod 18, which slides in a sleeve or recess (not shown) secured to the air chamber 4, are secured to the free end of the bag 14. A scale 19 and pointers 20 are adjustably secured to a framework 21 outside the air chamber 4. Before the respiration or anµsthetic apparatus is used the patient breathes into and from a mask connected with the bag 14 and the positions of the indicator 15 at maximum and minimum inflation of the bag 14 for normal respiration of the patient are indexed by the two pointers 20 respectively. As the anµsthetic or respiration apparatus is used care is taken that the bag 14 expands and contracts between these two positions. Specification 649,229 is referred to.
