695,548. Colour variable writing & compositions therefor. MERRITT, D. L. Nov. 9, 1950. [Dec. 23, 1949] No. 32983/49. Class 146 (iii). [Also in Group XVI] A colour variable writing composition comprises two or more colouring materials combined in such proportions as to produce a colour different from that of any of the colouring materials, at least one of the colouring materials being bleachable by a reagent which has no bleaching action on at least one of the other colouring materials. In examples (1) a typewriter ribbon is impregnated with an ink made by milling a mixture of Malachite Green A dissolved in oleic acid and Monolite Fast Scarlet R to which thin spindle oil has been added. The black print obtainable from this ribbon may be changed to red by bleaching with sodium hypochlorite solution ; (2) a carbon paper is made by coating paper with a composition obtained by milling a mixture of Malachite Green A dissolved in oleic acid and Monolite Fast Scarlet R admixed with carnauba wax and petroleum jelly; (3) Magenta is mixed with Monastral Blue VS ; (4) Rhodamine B is mixed with Monastral Blue S ; and (5) Acridine Orange A is mixed with carbon black. The ink may also be used directly by means of a writing instrument such as a pen or may be applied to a printing matrix. Bleaching, e.g. with a solution of sodium hypochlorite containing sodium chloride, may be followed by treatment with a dilute solution of hydrochloric or oxalic acid.
