Abstract

1455678 Luminescent compositions and uses thereof AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO 10 Jan 1975 [9 May 1974] 1189/75 Heading C4S [Also in Division B6] A printing ink consists essentially of colouring matter and a vehicle soluble in water and lower alcohols and lower ketones, the vehicle being glycerine in amount 10-30% by wt., and sorbitol and water in a wt. ratio of approximately 4 : 1, the colouring matter including a bleachable dye soluble in lower alcohols and ketones and a fluorescent pigment which is non- bleachable, insoluble in water and only slightly soluble in the lower alcohols and ketones. The ink may be printed as a background of fine lines made up of dots characters, words or geometric figures, and facilitates detection of unauthorized changes to safety papers such as negotiable instruments. Alteration by solution, bleaching or erasure techniques is detectable by colour and/or fluorescent intensity changes, such as under u.v. Two sets of background elements in adjacent areas may be in the same colour, two superimposed sets may be different colours, or a single set of elements or an even background may be in a single ink. The dye may be insoluble in water, but when exposed to air for sustained periods in humid climates, should be insoluble. A specific ink composition is included. Eradication techniques for conventional inks, ball point inks and transfer sheet (e.g. carbon paper or typewriter ribbon) inks are detailed.
