Abstract

695,535. Spring suspensions ; springs. NYSTROM, K. G. Jan. 25, 1952 [Jan. 27, 1951; Jan. 18, 1952], No. 2165/52. Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii). [Also in Group XXXI] In a spring suspension device for the individual wheels of single or multiple axle road vehicles, comprising a rearwardly-directed crank which directly or indirectly supports a wheel hub spindle, the crank-shaft of the crank being substantially parallel with the spindle and journalled for rotation in the vehicle, and a number of supporting and recoil springs adapted to influence the swinging movement of the crank arm, the springs comprise helical torsional springs threaded over the crank-shaft and the or each supporting spring and the or each recoil spring are initially tensioned when the crank takes up its position of rest corresponding to an unloaded road wheel. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, in which a crank arm 21 is formed with a wheel carrying spindle 20 and a crank-shaft 22, the latter is mounted in bearings 24 and 25 in a housing 23, the bearing 24 being secured in an annular recess in the housing by screws 26 and the bearing 25 consisting of an inner ring 27 which is locked within an outer ring 28 secured to the housing by screws 29. One end of a main spring 33 engages in a radially-extending bore in a spring fastening secured to the shaft 22 adjacent the bearing 24 and the other end of the spring engages a hole in the outer ring 28. The ends of a recoil spring 34 disposed within the spring 33 and wound in the opposite sense to the latter, engages respectively in an axially extending bore 37 of the spring fastening and in a circular slot in the ring 27. The springs 33 and 34 are initially tensioned by relative rotation of the rings 27 and 28. The housing 23 is disposed in an axle tube 41 carried on the vehicle chassis such that the arm 21 is directed downwardly under noload on the vehicle. In the arrangement according to Fig. 4 (not shown), a spring device as above is secured each in one end of an axle tube of a single-axle trailer, a draw-bar being secured to the axle tube. In the arrangement according to Fig. 8, the springs 33 and 34 are of the same diameter, the former engaging at one end in the bearing 24 and at the other end in a radially-extending hole in a fastener 45 secured to the shaft 22. The recoil spring similarly engages the fastener 45 and at its other end engages in a slot in a bearing 48 secured to the housing 23. The springs may be initially tensioned by relative rotation of the bearings 24 and 28. The invention is applicable to a two-axle vehicle (Figs. 13 and 14, not shown), in which the axles are mounted on a pair of longitudinally extending rocker beams pivoted to the vehicle chassis by a transversely extending rocker shaft. In the application to an eightwheeled trailer (see Group XXXI), the two rear pairs of wheels are mounted on a sub-frame preferably detachably united to the trailer chassis, and all the wheels are suspended by a suspension device as described above.
