695,350. Multiplex radio signalling; frequency modulation. PHILCO CORPORATION. March 3, 1952 [March 30, 1951], No. 5506/52. Class 40 (v). In a communication system employing a carrier wave frequency-modulated by a composite signal comprising a frequency-modulated sub-carrier and an amplitude-modulated component extending over a frequency-range different from that of the sub-carrier, spurious phase modulation of the latter in a superheterodyne receiver by the amplitude modulated signal, due to the phase/frequency characteristic of the receiver I.F. amplifier not being linear, is counteracted by causing the local oscillator to track the incoming signal for frequencies within the signal (audio) modulation band of the sub-carrier. As shown applied to a television system with a carrier frequency modulated by a video signal and a frequencymodulated sub-carrier for sound, the output of a receiver frequency discriminator 24 is passed through a low-pass amplifier 26, passing up to 30 kc/s., to frequency-modulate approximately in step the local oscillator 21, and the therefore suppressed low-frequency video components are reintroduced into the output signal from the amplifier 26 in a combiner circuit 28, preferably with a delay, produced by a network 30, equal to that produced by the I.F. amplifier 22.
