Abstract
695,335. Luminescent screens. EDISON SWAN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 10, 1951 [Aug. 31, 1950], No. 18879/51. Class 39(i) A method of forming a luminescent screen consists in settling a phosphor on to a supporting surface, such as the face of a cathode ray tube, from a suspension in an acidified solution of an alkali silicate having a pH in the range 6 to 7.5. The solution may be potassium or sodium silicate acidified with phosphoric, sulphuric, acetic, oxalic or hydrochloric acid or an acid salt such as sodium hydrogen sulphate or sodium dihydrogen phosphate. Potassium silicate and phosphoric acid are preferred. The settling process comprises placing in the tube a cushion consisting of water, a water solution of the acid or acidifying agent or the silicate, or the silica so] produced by mixing them. The phosphor is suspended in water which may also contain some or all of the acid or acidifying agent or the silicate or the silica sol. The phosphor suspension is added to the tube prior to, during, or after formation of the silica sol bath in the cushioning layer. After a time depending on the silicate concentration and temperature, and which may be as short as 12 mins., the tube is inverted so that the liquid pours off.
