Abstract

A lubricant comprises a mixture of a liquid copolymeric siloxane, as defined below, and from 2 to 10 per cent by weight (based on the weight of the mixture) of either a chlorinated diphenyl or a chlornaphthaxanthate, with or without up to 2 per cent by weight (based on the weight of the mixture) of either dibenzyl disulphide or 2-benzothiazyl-N,N-diethylthiocarbamyl sulphide. The chlorinated diphenyl contains from 48 to 62 per cent by weight of chlorine and the chlornaphthazanthate 31 per cent by weight of chlorine and 11 per cent by weight of sulphur. Such a chloronaphthaxanthate may be produced by reacting a chlorinated petroleum naphtha or chlorinated petroleum ether with a metal xanthate or thiocarbonate. The liquid copolymeric siloxanes are constructed from units of the general formula RSiO 3/2 , R2SiO and R3SiO 1/2 , such that they have a degree of substitution greater than 2 and less than 3 organic radicals per silicon atom and contain halogenated phenyl or halogenated xenyl radicals having substituted therein from 1 to 7 inclusive chlorine and/or bromine atoms, the remaining organic radicals being methyl and phenyl and at least 37 per cent of the total radicals being methyl. All the halogen of these copolymeric siloxanes is contained in the halogenated aryl radicals, which are present in such an amount that the ratio of halogen atoms to Si atoms in the polymer is from 0.05 to 3. The lubricants may be used as oils or converted into greases by adding a thickening agent such as lithium salts of fatty acids and the alkali or alkaline earth metal salts of alicyclic substituted fatty acids, such fatty acids having a chain length of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms. They may also contain other additives such as corrosion inhibitors. Examples are given and Specification 688,166 also is referred to.ALSO:A lubricant comprises a mixture of a liquid copolymeric siloxane as defined below, and from 2 to 10 per cent by weight (based on the weight of the mixture) of either a chlorinated diphenyl or a chlornaphthaxanthate, with or without up to 2 per cent by weight (based on the weight of the mixture) of either dibenzyl disulphide or 2-benzothiazyl-N. N-diethylthiocarbamyl sulphide. The chlorinated diphenyl contains from 48 to 62 per cent by weight of chlorine and the chlornaphthaxanthate 31 per cent by weight of chlorine and 11 per cent by weight of sulphur. Such a chloronaphthaxanthate may be produced by reacting a chlorinated petroleum naphtha or chlorinated petroleum ether with a metal xanthate or thiocarbonate.
