Abstract

695,194. Cutting tubes transversely. ROBINSON, E. B. May 23, 1949. No. 13749/49. Addition to 653,613. Class 31 (i). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a machine for making paper &c. tubes according to the parent Specification in which strip material having repeated patterns printed thereon is wound helically on a mandrel, the continuous tube being cut automatically into lengths without cutting into the patterns, by means controlled by mechanism co-operating with control marks on the strip, the traverse of the cutter device longitudinally of the tube is effected by the tube during its production under the control of the said mechanism. The tube 1, advancing continuously off the stationary mandrel 2, engages an arm 40 adjustably mounted on a rod 41 slidable in a bracket 42 mounted on a slidable carrier 43 for the cutter 44. A clutch comprising gripping pads 74 is actuated by a pneumatic ram 53, the valve 55 of which is actuated by the control mechanism (not shown). The rotary cutter, driven by an electric motor 58 is moved transversely of the tube by a ram 59 under the control of a valve 64 actuated by a striker 68 on the carrier 43. Reset switches 69, 71 for the valves 55<SP>1</SP>, 64 are actuated by a striker 73. The .clutch 74 may be replaced by an hydraulic clutch, Fig. 2 . (not shown).
