Abstract

695,051. Speed governors. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. March 21, 1951 [March 21, 1950], No. 6806/51. Class 57 [Also in Group XXVII] Automatic speed-governing means for internal combustion engines of the injection type comprising a governor, preferably a centrifugal governor, for an upper speed range and a hydraulically acting governor for a lower speed range, wherein the hydraulically acting governor comprises a spring- loaded piston which is connected to the fuel-regulating member of the injection pump and which is actuated upon by fuel at a pressure, substantially proportional to the engine speed, prevailing in the said pump. In the arrangement shown, a centrifugal governor 11, operative in the higher speed range actuates a lever 22 connected to the control rack 4 of a fuel-injection pump. The fuel-injection pump is fed by a fuel pump 7 actuated by a cam 13 on the governor shaft which is coupled to the shaft 2 of the injection pump. The fuel pump delivers to a passage 20 which is connected to the suction passage 40 through a relief valve 43 fitted with a throttle opening 41. The passage 20 is connected to a piston 36 connected by a lever 32 to the rack 4 and forms the governor operative in the lower speed range. The lever 22 is loaded at its pivot 23 by a torsion spring, manually adjustable, and loading the centrifugal governor. A stop 44 in the lever 22 is loaded by an idling spring arrangement which comprises a spring 46 engaging an abutment 47 loaded by a stronger spring 50 adjustable by a plug 49. Speed fluctuations at idling speeds are damped by the dash pot action of liquid passing through an orifice 48 in the abutment 47. The rack 4 has a pin 51, see Fig. 4, and its movement in a direction to increase the fuel is limited by the end 56 of a lever 55 which moves a lever 53 engaging a stop 58 through a leaf spring 57 which flexes to permit a slightly increased supply which is advantageous at low and medium speeds. A manually-operated lever 61 has a projection 63 for stopping the engine and also has an abutment 60 so that at starting, the lever 55 is raised by the abutment against the spring 59 to remove the projection 56 from the path of the pin 51 and enable the projection 62 on the lever 61 to move the rack to a position providing excess fuel.
