Abstract
694,953. Expansion joints. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 1, 1950 [Feb. 17, 1949], No. 2633/50. Class 20(iv) An expansion joint is formed between adjacent metal surfaces e.g. between roofing, outer wall, or floor plates, by interposing between the interlocking edges of the metal a flexible member to which is stuck a layer of silicone rubber. A flexible strip 9, e.g. made of tin, lead, copper, glasscloth, tape &c. carries on one face a layer of silicone rubber 8 and on the other face an adhesive 4. To form an expansion joint, Fig. 4, the strip 9 is folded to adhere to the flange 2 of a roofing plate 1 and the flange 5 of an adjacent plate 6 is interlocked to engage the silicone rubber layer 8. The joint is then hammered down in the wellknown manner leaving a part 3 of the strip 9 projected outward from the joint. One method of forming a strip includes dipping a copper foil into a boiling solution of phosphoric acid and chromium trioxide for 30 secs., removing, washing, and drying the strip, and treating one surface with uncured silicone rubber paste comprising a titanium dioxide filler, a solid, elastic, curable methylpolysiloxane and a benzoyl peroxide as a vulcanizing agent. The silicone rubber, about 20 mils thick, is calendered on to the strip which is heated to 150‹C for an hour to cure the silicone rubber. The latter may be calendered on to both sides of the backing strip. Specifications 676,464 and 694,952, [both in Group III], are referred to.
