Abstract

818,176. Coated polyalkylene terephthalate films. KALLE & CO., A. G. Feb. 20, 1956 [Feb. 19, 1955], No. 5216/56. Class 140. Coated foils comprise a base foil of a high polymeric polyalkylene terephthalate, especially polyethylene terephthalate that has been stretched in two directions at right angles to at least twice its original dimensions and fixed in this condition by heating at 140-230‹ C., provided with an anchoring agent on one or both sides which is a difficultly volatile organic isocyanate, tri-N : N-ethyleneimino phosphine oxide or p-nitraniline, and a top coating layer consisting wholly or for the most part of polyethylene. The isocyanates which are used as anchoring agents are defined as including mono-, di- and polyisocyanates, also monomeric, dimeric and polymeric isocyanates and addition products of isocyanates with tertiary alcohols, ethyleneimine or acetamide which will reform isocyanates on heating. The coating composition may be wholly polyethylene or may contain polyisobutylene and may be applied as a melt or a solution in such solvents as trichloroethylene, chlorobenzene or xylene. In the construction of the coated foil it is necessary to apply heat at various stages. If tri - N : N - ethyleneimino - phosphine oxide is used as anchoring agent, the foil and anchor layer must be heated prior to coating with polyethylene, and always the final coated foil must be heated to provide firm adhesion between the layers, but in any of these operations the temperature at which heating is carried out must not exceed the temperature at which the base foil was fixed. The anchoring agent may be incorporated in the polyethylene coating composition and a preformed polyethylene foil may be secured to the polyethylene teraphthalate foil to form a laminated assembly.
