Abstract

694,800. Lighting fittings. SMART & BROWN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Nov. 26, 1951 [Nov. 24. 1950], No. 28794/50. Class 75(iv) In a lighting fitting comprising an elongated lamp supported parallel to a. trough 1 mounted with its open sides against a ceiling, a supporting plate 4 is secured to an end of the trough and carries both a lampholder 2 and a decorative hollow cover 3 for the end of the trough. The supporting plate is disposed in a plane tranverse to the trough and comprises two parts, an upper part 4a which fits inside the trough with its edges abutting the walls thereof and with lugs 4c at these edges engaged in slits 1b in the trough, and a lower part 4b which extends . downwardly-through a slit 1a in the trough to the outside thereof. The hollow cover 3 is made of moulded synthetic resin; it is at least partly open at the top where it abuts the ceiling and its side facing towards the other end of the lamp is partlyclosed by a vertical wall 3a having a Y- shaped cut-out providing edges 3b which abut the outside of the trough. The vertical wall 3a overlaps the lower part 4b of the supporting plate on the side facing the other end of 'the lamp and is secured there-- to by screws 5. The lampholder 2 is secured by screws 6 to the lower part 4b of the supporting plate with its major portion within the end cover and its socket portion 2b projecting through an aperture in the supporting plate and through the lower part of the Y cut-out in the wall 3a of the cover. The upper part 4a of the supporting plate is bent over parallel to the ceiling to provide a plat-- form 4d on which a starter switch 7 is mounted with its push button projecting through a hole in the bottom of the trough. In a modified construction the edge .of the supporting plate is formed to fit against the outside of the trough and has two lugs which pass through slots in the trough. To engage the lugs in the slots the sides of the trough are pressed towards each other and then permitted to spring back. An upward extension of the plate passes through a slot in the bottom of the trough into the interior and secured to this extension is a separate switch-supporting bracket which also carries a cross-piece preventing inadvertent inward pressing of the sides of the trough. In this modified construction two lampholders are secured to the supporting plate. A supporting plate with a lampholder and an end cover is secured to each end of the trough.
