Class 118 (i) [Also in Groups XIII, XIX, XXVI, XXVII, XXIX and XXXIV] A piston 20, to which the fluid pressure in the cooling or lubricating system of an I.C. engine is communicated through a conduit 17 and flexible diaphragm 19, normally holds up a lever 22 against the pressure of an adjustably loaded spring 35 but, on pressure failure, allows the lever 22 to be moved by the spring 35 to (a) force through an abutment 34 a detent 25 clear of a trip lever 29 to allow a spring 32 to open the control valve 11 of a compressed-air actuated main alarm 12 and (b) operate, through an adjustable tripping screw 44 on the lever 22 actuating the switch roller 43 of a micro-switch 40, an audible and/or visual alarm remotely located as in the engineers' quarters of a ship. Action (b) may precede or be simultaneous with action (a). A spring 33 re-sets the detent 25 when the lever 29 is depressed manually. A gauge 38 indicates the system pressure. The piston 20 may be replaced by a member acting on the lever 22 in accordance with temperature changes, as in the lubricating system. The remotely located alarm may be common to several main alarms as described, observation as of the gauges 38 indicating the faulty system causing actuation of the remote alarm. The described apparatus may operate an engine cut-out or cutouts in lieu of any given alarm or alarms respectively.
