Abstract

694,284. Mixing appliances. ALDERFER, S. W. Sept. 25, 1951, No. 22388/51. Class 86 Apparatus for aerating and beating a liquid such as rubber latex in the manufacture of sponged latex comprises a conical rotor, a conical shell surrounding the rotor, the surface of the rotor and the opposing surface of the shell being constructed with ribs which intersect, the tops of opposing ribs being closely spaced so that liquid passing between them will be subjected to a shearing action while the ribs on the rotor tend to propel the liquid towards the apex of the shell, and means for introducing a continuously flowing stream of liquid and air into the apex of the shell and thence into the space between the rotor and the shell. A conical rotor 10 having in its surface one or more spiral grooves 74 which form one or more spiral ribs, is mounted for rotation within a stationary conical shell 16 having on its internal surface a plurality of longitudinal ribs 66, 67. The major parts of the surfaces of the rotor 10 and shell 16 are parallel but at the lower end an upwardly tapering space 65 is formed which leads from a preliminary mixing and feed chamber 82. Latex and air are fed at predetermined rates into upper and lower portions respectively of the chamber 82, which are on opposite sides of an air-permeable diaphragm 85 of finely woven nylon sheeting, so that air passes upwardly through the diaphragm to become disseminated in the latex. The dissemination of air in the latex is assisted by a paddle 92 mounted on a shaft 90 depending from the rotor. The pre-mixed latex and air is impelled upwardly by the force of the incoming latex and enters the space between the rotor and shell where it is subjected to shearing action, the direction of rotation of the rotor being such that the effect of the spiral 74 is to oppose the upward flow of latex. The foamed latex emerges at the upper end of the cones and passes into a chamber 72 defined by a cylindrical wall 69 where it has a rolling and rotating motion which is utilized to effect mixing of setting or gelling agents introduced at measured rates by delivery pipes 130, 141, Fig. 1 (not shown) opening above the chamber 72, the final mixture being delivered by a shoot 121 to moulds or the like. The shell 16 is vertically displaceable to permit adjustment of the spacing between the rotor and shell and to allow the rotor and shell to be separated for cleaning purposes.
