Abstract

<PICT:0693565/III/1> In gas purification plant employing electrical equipment (e.g. an electrostatic precipitator) there is provided a protective arrangement, responsive to the oxygen or air content of the gas, and comprising a chamber 1 into which a sample of gas is introduced at E, and a predetermined quantity of oxygen or air at F, igniting means A in the chamber, and means responsive to ignition within the chamber to initiate protective and/or alarm action. As a result of adding the air or oxygen, ignition will occur whilst the actual oxygen content of the gas is still within safe limits. A flexible diaphragm B responds to an increased pressure in the chamber, operating a contact breaker C (see Group XXXVII) in the circuit of the electrical equipment. The circuit may also be broken by a thermostat D, responsive to an increase in temperature. The ignition means may be a sparking plug or an electrically heated element. Gas to be tested and additional air are introduced into the chamber by a compressor 3, either intermittently or continuously; with intermittent operation, the compressor may be synchronized with the action of the sparking plug. Ignited gas passes from the chamber to an expansion vessel 2 provided with a safety valve. Fluid seal devices may isolate the chamber from the gas supply.
