[Also in Groups XX and XXXVI] In an aspiration pyrometer, air at high velocity aspirated from between a block, 15 and the moving surface whose temperature is 'being measured is utilized for heating the surroundings of a thermometric element 18 to reduce heat losses therefrom, and air at lower velocity is aspirated wholly from the moving surface for heating the element itself. In measuring the surface temperature of a rotating roll 10 the block 15 of heat insulating glass having its face 15a curved to conform to the roll surface is supported in close juxtaposition to the latter. A vacuum pump is flow connected for drawing air up a suction duct 16 extending through; block 15, the bulk of the air coming from between surface 15a and the roll surface and passing around the periphery of a shallow recess 16a at the lower end of duct 16. This high velocity air heats the spirally wound leads 19 which support the hot junction 18 of a thermocouple, the leads being cemented in a bore 20 of the block 15 and terminating at binding posts 23, 24. The block 15 is resiliently supported by clamping member 30, brackets 31, and springs 33, 34, within a sheet metal shroud 32, which is held by an arm 13 attached to a frame member. In a modification a temperature-sensitive conducting material is supported by two wire conductors which are taut between posts projecting from the block 15.
