Abstract
693,201. Copy-milling. NEW HERMES ENGRAVING MACHINE CORPORATION. June 25, 1951 [Nov. 4, 1950], No. 15015/51. Class 83 (iii). A portable pantograph engraving machine has the main pivot 60 for the pantograph 34 mounted on a slide 33 which is adjustable transversely on a horizontally - pivoted support 20 in a plane containing the central axes A of the work-holder 111 and template-table 93. The base 11 comprises a central socket 12, on which a holder for the work Wis pivoted, and arms 15 carrying front standards 91 for the template-table 93 and rear standards 18 for the spring-loaded pivoted support 20 and for the spring-loaded swinging arm 24 on which the cutter motor 26 is mounted. Centrally of the support 20, a guide 31 is formed for the slide 33 and a pinion drive 37 for the rack 38 on the slide. A scale 35 and clamp 36 are provided. The end and side arms 41, 43 of the pantograph are of fixed length but the arm 53 connecting the pantograph to the pivot 60 is adjustable against a scale 58 on one of the side arms and the cutter spindle 73 is adjustable against a scale 69a on an extension of one of the end arms; the arm 80 carrying the stylus 85 is pivoted on an extension of the other end arm and is biased upwards by a plate spring. By adjusting the positions of the pivot 60, the arm 53 and the cutter spindle 73, the ratio of reproduction may be altered without shifting the work or template-holders. A template channel 94 is transversely adjustable on the template-table 93 and carries the templates T either parallel to the main axis of the machine in a slot 102 or transverse to the main axis, as shown, in a block 102b slidable in the channel 94. The work-holder is angularly adjustable in the socket 12 to lie parallel or transverse to the main axis of the machine. In one form, Fig. 11, it comprises a pair of jaws 139, 140, adjustable by a right and left-hand screwed spindle 133 on compound tables 123, 119 and the work is held between adaptors 146 fitted in sockets on the jaws or in V-shaped or semicircular recesses 150, 151, or in adaptors 155 fitted on pins 153. In another form, Fig. 1, the work-holder comprises a bar 160 which can be clamped in two angular positions in the socket 12 and on which are slidable clamps 166 carrying pillars 169 for vertically-adjustable blocks 170 to which conical adaptors 177 are fitted. The means for adjusting the tables 119, 123 and the blocks 170 comprises a handrotated spindle with wedge-shaped pulleys 129 engaging in tapered slots in the tables or blocks and driving them after the manner of a rack and pinion.
