Abstract
693,191. Batteries. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. Dec. 4, 1951 [Jan. 13, 1951], No. 998/51. Class 53. [Also in Group XI] The walls of an accumulator case are provided with embedded electric heating elements which may be connected to an outside source of current or to the terminals of the accumulator which may itself provide the heating current. The heating elements may comprise metal wires or tapes or of layers of conducting rubber. One method of making the element comprises bonding a metal foil to an insulating sheet of a polyvinyl compound, rubber, &c., and printing an outline of the resistance element on the metal foil and then removing the uncovered metal. The case may consist of two members one within the other the inner member carrying the heating element on its outer surface, the two members being subsequently vulcanized together. A switch may be provided to cut out the heating elements or to connect them in series or parallel and a thermostat may be incorporated in the case and in the heating circuit to maintain a constant temperature. Fig. 1 shows a case having metal resistance tapes 2, 4 embedded in the walls and connected to terminals 3. Fig. III shows a case made from two closely fitting members 5, 6, the heating element 2 being mounted in grooves in the outer surface of the inner member 5. Fig. IV shows a modification in which the heating element consists of conducting rubber 7 let into a recess in the member 5.
