Abstract
A liquid composition comprises a mixture of methylpolysiloxanes having a CH3 : Si ratio of at most 1.4, of which at least 30 per cent by weight consists of liquid methyl polysiloxanes which contain 8 to 20 Si atoms in the polysiloxane molecule, which boil at 120 DEG to 250 DEG C. under a pressure of 8 mm. of mercury and which gel under the action of lead naphthenate. The compositions may be made by hydrolysing an ethereal solution of a mixture of halogen silanes conforming to the formula (CH3)nSiX4-n and having a CH3 : Si ratio of at most 1.4, by means of water in amount of 1 to 10 times the quantity theoretically necessary for the hydrolysis, the latter being effected without the addition of free acid to the hydrolysis medium. An alternative method consists in adding the liquid methyl polysiloxanes to the methyl polysiloxane resins. Examples are given.
