Abstract

The invention comprises a dye obtainable by carbazolizing 1 : 11 - 41 : 111 - 411 : 1111 - tetraanthrimide with aluminium chloride in presence of a tertiary base free from hydroxyl groups. The product dyes or prints cotton, linen, artificial silk, or regenerated cellulose brown grey shades as such or in the form of a leuco ester. Quinoline or acridine are specified as bases. In examples, the tetranthrimide is heated with aluminium chloride in pyridine, triethylamine, a -picoline, or a mixture of b - and g -picoline. A dyeing example is also given. 1 : 11 - 41 : 111 - 411 : 1111 - Tetranthrimide is obtained by (1) condensation of 4-chloro-1,11-dianthrimide and 4-amino-1,11-dianthrimide or (2) condensation of 1-chloranthraquinone and 4 - amino - 1 : 11 : 41 : 111 - trianthrimide, o (3) condensation of 2 mols. 1-chloranthraquinone and 1 mol. 4,41-diamino-1,11-dianthrimide. 4 - Chloro - 1 : 11 - dianthrimide is prepared by a Sandmeyer reaction from the 4-amino body. 4 - Amino - 1 : 11 - 41 : 111 - trianthrimide is obtained by condensing 4-chloro-1,11-dianthrimide with 1 - amino - 4 - nitroanthraquinone, followed by reduction.
