Abstract

692,642. Machine details; copying. ARMYTAGE, F. W. March 10, 1952 [Dec. 8, 1950], No. 30050/50. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIX] A fluid-pressure tracer valve for copying machine tools, such as milling machines or lathes, comprises inner and outer valve members axially reciprocable relative to one another by connections from the tracer stylus 25, one of the members, preferably the outer member, being built up from a series of rings 14. The rings 14 are chamfered at 16 and slotted at 17 on one face and are assembled in three pairs face to face to form channels leading to annular grooves in the valve body 1 from which a passage 9 leads to the pressure source and passages 5, 13 lead to exhaust. Slotted spacers 15 are fitted between the rings 14 to provide communication with annular grooves from which passages 7, 11 lead through a reversing valve 31 to the ends of the working cylinder. The inner valve member has external annular grooves 21 and is movable axially through about two-thousandths of an inch by either axial or lateral pressure on the stylus, the valve stem engaging the inner member by a conical- and spherically-faced connector such as 24 and being supported by a spherical bearing such as 26, or a curved flanged bearing, and an adjustable plug 27. An adjustable spring 22 tends to force the inner valve member downwards, and a pin-and-slot connection 29 prevents rotation of the valve stem. When the stylus is moving over the pattern without deflection, pressure fluid in the middle annular space 21 flows equally past the edges of the lands on the inner member and the edges of the middle pair of rings to the passages 7, 11 and thus to each end of the cylinder to hold it stationary, and the lands overlap the inner edges of the two outer pairs of rings to cut off the exhaust passages 5, 13. Deflection of the tracer moves the inner valve member up or down, opening one end of the cylinder fully to pressure and the other end to exhaust. Alternatively, internal ports may be formed in the inner member leading to annular ducts registering with corresponding ducts in the outer member.
