Abstract
692,608. Making electric condensers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 10, 1951 [Dec. 18, 1950], No. 28889/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXXVI] Special methods of jointing.-A method of manufacturing an electric capacitor comprises artificially oxidizing the surfaces of an electrode foil therefor, and applying a terminal strap under pressure to a surface of the electrode so as to produce an indentation in and a partial reduction in thickness of the electrode and terminal strap and form an integral union, or cold weld, between them. A capacitor comprises a pair of electrode foils 10 of, e.g. aluminium or tantalum, separated by insulating strips and wound into a roll, Fig. 1 (not shown). Each foil 10 is artificially oxidized to produce a film 11 substantially thicker than one atmospherically formed. A terminal strap 13 of, e.g. aluminium, tantalum, or tinned copper, is placed against the oxidized foil and pressure is applied at points 17 between a pair of dies or between a die and an anvil. The die, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprises a cylindrical body of hardened tool steel having a tip about “ inch diameter, a steady load of 4000 lbs. or an impact of some 10 ft. lbs. being applied thereto. The pressure causes the metal of the foil and strap to cold flow at the points 17 and produce a weld. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 678,610.
