Abstract
692,527. Centrifugal governors; elastic-fluid turbines. ONSRUD MACHINE WORKS, Inc. May 28, 1951 [Feb, 21, 1951], No. 12446/51. Classes 57 and 110(iii) [Also in Group XXIX] A centrifugal governor, particularly for controlling the flow of pressure fluid to a high speed turbine rotor 10 driving a rotary tool, comprises a centrifugally expansible elastic body 33 carried by a member 9 secured to a driving shaft 3 and an axially movable sleeve 25 radially confining the elastic body and abutting one end thereof, whereby the body is caused to expand axially under centrifugal force and move the sleeve which causes the speed to be controlled. The latter is keyed to the elastic body at 34 to ensure its return movement. The flow of pressure fluid from an inlet 14 through passages 15, 19 leading to a turbine nozzle 11 is controlled by a valve 16 which is loaded by a spring 21 and is subjected to fluid pressure on its front surface through the passage 15 and on its rear surface through passages 22, 22.1 in which an adjustable throttle 23 may be provided. A bleed passage 24. controlled by a shoulder 27 on the governor sleeve 25, is normally open to atmosphere so that the pressure on the rear of the valve 16 is reduced and the latter remains open. When the speed increases beyond a predetermined value the bleed passage 24 closes and full inlet pressure acts on the rear of the valve 16 and closes it. The bleed passage 24 is formed in a plug member 35 and the inner end of the passage is eccentric with the axis of the plug' member. Rotation of the latter adjusts the axial position of the inner end of the passage with respect to the shoulder 27 and thus the speed at which the bleed passage is closed. A second nozzle 11.1 uncontrolled by the governor is provided. In another embodiment the governor sleeve 25 is loaded axially by a spring washer. Instead of the second nozzle the valve 16 is provided with a restricted bore which is always open to the nozzle.
