Abstract

A nickel hydrogenation catalyst, particularly suitable for the production of amino compounds from the corresponding nitro compounds, is prepared by adding alkali metal hydroxide to an aqueous nickel salt solution to precipitate nickel hydroxide, filtering and washing the filter cake and then, without drying, reducing it in aqueous suspension, with hydrogen under pressure at 80 DEG -150 DEG C. Specified nickel salts are the nitrate and sulphate. A spent, chemically changed catalyst may be regenerated by first converting it into a nickel salt and then proceeding as above. If the exhausted catalyst has not been chemically changed it may be regenerated by the method of Specification 692,300.
