Abstract

Natural rubber latex is stabilized by incorporating an halogen derivative of an hydroxydiphenyl methane or a metal salt thereof. Preferably 0.01 to 1.0 per cent. by weight of the compound based on the weight of rubber latex is used. Specified compounds are 2, 21 dihydroxy 5, 51 dichlorodiphenyl methane, 2, 21 dihydroxy 3, 5, 31, 51, tetrachloro diphenyl methane, 2, 21 dihydroxy 5, 51 dibromo diphenyl methane, 2, 21 dihydroxy 3, 6, 31, 61 tetrachloro 5, 51 dibromodiphenyl methane, and the zinc, magnesium, aluminium, barium, calcium, mercuric and sodium and potassium salts thereof. The preparation of such salts is described in Specification 675,200. The preferred salts are those which have a solubility in water at 25 DEG C. of less than 0.20 parts by weight in 100 parts of water. In an example, 2, 21 *?* dihydroxy - 5, 51 dichlorodiphenyl methane was fused with benzyl benzoate and oleic acid added, to this mixture at 95 DEG C. was added casein, ammonia and water and the whole emulsified, this emulsion or a corresponding emulsion formed from the mercuric or aluminium salt was then added to a concentrated ammonia free natural rubber latex to which catalase had been added.
