Abstract

691,548. Pocket inhalers. BEECHAM RESEARCH LABORATORIES, Ltd. Nov. 5, 1951 [Nov 6, 1950], No. 27111/50. Addition to 645,645. Class 81 (ii). A pocket nasal inhaler as claimed in the parent Specification which incorporates a chamber for inhalant communicating with both the atmosphere and breathing apertures, a non-return valve preventing exhaled air passing through the chamber, a passage'for exhaled air communicating with the breathing apertures and the atmosphere and a non-return valve preventing the inhaling of air through the passage, is characterised by the provision of a nosepiece having nasal plugs so spaced apart that they may be applied to both nostrils at once, the plugs having adjacent walls which converge downwardly to meet each other, a breathing aperture being located in each such wall. The main body 1 of the inhaler is provided with a boss 4 on which a cylindrical cartridge 5, containing an inhalant mass 5a, is a force fit. A passage 13 containing a ball valve 14 leads from the cartridge 5 to the interior of the nosepiece 8 which is provided with nasal plugs 9, 10 each having a breathing aperture 9a, 10a. A passage 15 for exhaled air leads from the nosepiece 8 to the atmosphere and is provided with a ball valve 16. Covers 2, 3 are removably fitted over the top and bottom respectively of the main body 1, a passage 12 in the main body 1 providing communication between the atmosphere and the space enclosed by the lower cover 3 when the upper cover is removed for permitting inhaling. The cartridge 5 is replaceable and before use the apertures through which air enters and leaves it are covered by lids: The tops of the nasal plugs 9, 10 slope downwardly towards a wall common to both of them.
