In a seal device comprising a U-shaped member whose limbs are adapted to be closed and automatically locked together,. an inturned flange 16 is provided at the end of one limb 10, and a tongue 18 set at right angles at the end of the other limb 11, the tongue 18 being adapted to engage in a transverse slot 17 in the flange 16 when the limbs are closed together and to be bent towards the flange 16 by engagement with a curved surface 22 of the limb 10 behind the slot 17. The tongue 18 has a shear cut or slot 20 producing a catch 21 which is bent out of the plane of the tongue by the curved surface 22, thereby preventing retraction of the tongue 18 after it has entered the slot 17. The bending takes place along line 23 which may also be weakened by impression. To ensure that the sections 10, 11 are pressed together sufficiently to bend the catch 21 to lock them together, a snap 24 is provided near the base of the tongue 18. This snap 24 extends farther to the left than slot 17 so that, in closing, the section 11 is sprung out of place laterally and springs back with a, snapping sound after the snap has passed through the slot. Weakened lines 25 are provided so that when opening is attempted by inserting a tool between end portions 26 and flange 16 a tear is produced on one of these lines. To attach the seal to the binding element the latter is inserted between the open jaws to a position near the line of fold 12. The binding element may be cord, ribbon, or stranded wire and, if tied together, the knot is encased within the box formed by side walls 14, 19 of the seal.
