Abstract

691,388. Filters. SPODIG, H. Aug. 23, 1950 [April 20, 1949], No. 20813/50. Class 46 [Also in Group II] A magnetic filter embodies at least one permanent magnet, pole pieces at opposite ends of the magnet and a plurality of plates disposed between the pole pieces, the plates - being spaced from one another and consisting alternately of ferromagnetic and diamagnetic materials. In a filter housing 1, Fig. 1, preferably of diamagnetic material, is inserted a magnet system consisting of a bar magnet 4 having pole pieces 2, 3, and, coaxially arranged therewith, ring plates 5, 6, sufficiently large in diameter to lie in the region of the main field of magnetic force between the pole pieces 2, 3, and held by diamagnetic bolts 7, Fig. 2, spaced from the bar magnet 4. The bolts 7 serve also to hold the fitter assembly together. The ring plates 5, of ferromagnetic material, alternate with the diamagnetic plates 6, the latter thus dividing the main force field into many small fields which act as a labyrinth to retain magnetic impurities. The plates 5, 6, by their proximity, constitute also a mechanical filter. To regulate the speed of flow of the liquid being filtered corrugations may be formed on one or both sides of the plate: Fig. 4 shows a typical arrangement. Alternatively, beads may be provided, e.g. by spot-welding, on both sides of the plate, or distance pieces 13; Fig. 8, may be inserted between plane plates 5, 6, and may be located by the bolts 7. A sieve 12 of diamagnetic material and constituting a mechanically-acting filter may be inserted in the casing around the magnetic filter. The liquid is pumped or sucked in at 8 and filtrate flows through holes 9 to the outlet 10. The magnet 4 may have a cross-section other than round and may be replaced by several magnets.
