Abstract

691,335. Luminescent screens. LEITZ GES., E. Dec. 21, 1950 [Dec. 27, 1949], No. 31095/50. Class 39(i). A method of making a mono-crystal luminescent screen comprises depositing the matrix on an auxiliary plate 1 in a vacuum, and enforcing the growth of the crystal simultaneously with or subsequently to the deposition, e.g. by using a mask 2 with a narrow slot 5 which broadens towards the uncovered portion of the plate, a heated platinum 3 wire being moved along the centre line with a speed smaller than or equal to the speed of crystallization. In one example, potassium bromide is evaporated in vacuum on to a plate of orthoclase (potassium feldspar) heated to 350‹C, the deposit tempered for several hours and activated with thallium. Zinc sulphide is evaporated on to a rock salt plate, activated at 350‹C with lead or copper the plate cemented to glass and the rock salt dissolved away. Another screen is obtained by evaporating rock salt on to glass, activated with silver. Materials suitable as matrices are alkaline and alkaline earth halides and sulphides of zinc, gadolinum and manganese, the activators being Ag, Cu, Th, K, Rb, Mg, Ni, Pb, Sr, Ba, Y and other rare earth metals.
