Abstract
689,683. Luminescent materials. LUMALAMPAN AKTIEBOLAG. March 25, 1949, No. 8212/49. Class 39(i). A luminescent material comprises a crystalline composition in accordance with the formula x Al 2 O 3 . y Me F( 2 , 3 ) together with a suitable activator, where Me denotes aluminium and/or a metal or metals from the second group of the periodic system with an atomic weight of less than 200, and the ratio x:y lies between 5:1 and 1:2 and is preferably 2 or 3: 1. The activator may be one or more of Mn, Cr, Cu, Bi, Sb, Pb or U and may vary from 0.001 up to 2 per cent in quantity. Mn gives a red emission and by the introduction of the other activators other colours can be produced. 3 Al 2 O 3 . Ca F 2 containing 0.1 per cent Mn as activator gives a red fluorescence within the range 6500-7000A when influenced by visible light, by long-wave ultra-violet light or corpuscular rays. The fluorescent materials may be produced by sintering a mixture of the desired fluoride and an aluminium compound which on being heated gives Al 2 O 3 , together with a thermally dissociable salt such as the sulphate or nitrate of the activating metal, for a period of 1-2 hours at a temperature of 1000-1400‹C. Examples using Ca. Sr and Mg as the metal Me are given. Specifications 456,325, 548,818. 548,997, 549,755 are referred to.
