Abstract

691,228. Preventing skids. AUTOSTABLE SOC. ANON. April 2, 1951 [March 31, 1950], No. 7566/51. Class 108 (ii). In an anti-skid device for road vehicles in which at least one inertia body is movable relatively to the vehicle from a normal position against the action of springs, at least two springs of different strength are actuated progressively according to the magnitude of the skid. In Fig. 4, the inertia weight 2 is slidably mounted between weaker springs 11 in a guide tube 10. The tube 10 is slidably mounted between stronger springs 12 in a main guide tube 1. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the tube 10 is dispensed with and the springs 11, 12 are separated by abutment discs. In a further construction, Fig. 2 (not shown), each stronger spring is mounted concentrically within the respective weaker spring which is of conical formation. The stronger spring is shorter than the weaker spring so that its end is not initially in engagement with the weight 2. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, a single weaker spring 8 is mounted between two weights 2, 2<1>, which are also acted on by respective stronger springs 9. Ball bearings 14, are mounted between the weights 2, 2<1>, and a rod 13 and tube 1. The rod 13 may be mounted resiliently at its ends or may be flexible, and the weights may have a clearance relative to the tube 1, so as to provide for damping movements of the vehicle in a vertical direction. Alternatively the ends of the tube 1 may be resiliently mounted on the vehicle frame. The device may be partially filled with oil.
