Abstract

691,062. Automatic current control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. April 20, 1951 [April 21, 1950], No. 9861/50. Class 38 (iv). In a servo amplifier a signal passing through one or more rotating D.C. machines is fed back through a transformer and magnetic amplifier to prevent hunting. In Fig. 1 to maintain strip tension constant in a cold strip rolling mill by maintaining constant the current supplied to a reel motor 1, a voltage dependent on motor current, obtained across a series resistor 3, energizes a control field winding 4 of a D.C. amplifier generator 10 which in turn energizes a control field winding 21 of another D.C. amplifier generator 20 supplying motor field winding 2. Tension is thus maintained at a value dependent on the energization of an opposed field winding 11 on generator 10, and to avoid hunting negative feed-back is applied to generator 10 by a further field winding 16 on it which is energized through a transformer 13 and a magnetic amplifier 15. In a modification (not shown), windings 11 and 16 are replaced by a pair of windings arranged with resistors in a bridge circuit, one diagonal of which is supplied from the magnetic amplifier and the other diagonal of which is supplied from a D.C. source adjustable for tension setting.
