Abstract
690,782. Making electric components. ELECTRIC TERMINAL CORPORATION. June 13, 1951, No. 14031/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Bending, soldering.-In a machine for attaching terminal tags &c. to conductors, tags in a connected strip are detached therefrom and ears on the tags are bent around the conductors between fixed and movable dies, one of which is heated to metal solder on the conductor or tag. Pairs of tags 65, Fig. 6, in a strip 20 are attached to conductor pairs 69, 70 placed between projecting ears 67, 68 on the tags between fixed and movable dies 12, 25, Fig. 7, the movable die 25 having pairs of recesses 26, 27 to engage and close the ears. The strip 20, Fig. 1, is fed from a reel 21 over a platform 16 level with the fixed die 12 and containing a thermostatically-controlled heating element 17 for pre-heating the strip 20. The 'lower die 12 also contains a thermostaticallycontrolled heating element 14 for heating the strip to soldering temperature. The upper die 25 is actuated by compressed air from a pipe 39 controlled by the operator's hand or foot through a valve 40 which deflects a flexible diaphragm 32 against a return-spring 34. The die 25 carries shear-blades 13a engaging in recesses on the die 12 to sever the tags from the strip 20 as the die 25 descends. The strip 20 is fed during each return stroke of the die 25 by a reciprocating pawl 53 carried on a bellcrank 47 pivoted to the machine frame at 48 and carrying a roller 50 which is engaged by a shoulder 51 on the die 25 as it rises. A spring 56 returns the bell-crank to its initial position against a stroke-adjusting stop 57 as the die 25 descends, a pawl 60 preventing rearward movement of the strip 20. In a modified machine terminal tags 100, Fig. 11, in end-toend relation in a continuous strip are fed end-wise to a cable 106, Fig. 9, and ears 101, 102 are closed about the cable end by a die 78 actuated by a pneumatic piston 94. The movable die 78 is mounted on a sliding block 79 having a thermostatically controlled heating element 80 and carrying a single cutter 83 engaging in a slot 84 for severing the tags from the strip. The lower die 77 may have a projection on its face for making an indent 108, Fig. 13, in the tag ears. Solder may be on the tags or may be attached to the cable ends 106 as by dipping.
