690,771. Filters. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 13, 1951 [Feb. 14. 1950], No. 3436/51. Class 46 A filter unit comprises a sheet of filter material folded to form a plurality of double-walled filter sections, the walls of each section being in contact and the filter sections being spaced apart by rounded or squared intermediate inner folds, and the sections being arranged into two longitudinal rows with a central longitudinal passage between them. As shown in the Figure (which is a horizontal cross-section) unfiltered liquid passes through a perforated cylindrical cover 46 of heavy paper into the spaces between filter sections 36 formed of contacting portions of a strip 34 preferably of resin-impregnated paper, and through the material to the contacting surfaces. The material is sufficiently rough to permit flow between the surfaces in contact, the filtrate by this means reaching the outer sides of partitions 18 kept apart by bosses 24 on their inner surfaces. The filtrate passes through perforations in the partitions 18 to a drainage passage formed by oppositely-disposed channel portions 26 and leaves by an aperture 16 in a lower plate 14 or by a similar aperture in an upper plate (not known). The upper and lower edges of the filter sections 36 and of the cover 46 are sealed to the plates, e.g. by a resinous compound The ends of the strip 34 are joined at 44 by adhesive. In a modification the folds 42 conform closely to the shape of the partitions and the partitions are spaced by bosses on one member only.
