Abstract

690,737. Cooling towers. OTTE, W. Sept. 24, 1949, No. 24598/49. Class 64 (i) [Also in Group XII] Apparatus for cooling liquids in which the liquid to be cooled(e.g. water) flows in a thin film over plate surfaces in counterflow to an ascending air stream, comprises a plurality of spaced cooling elements each consisting ofa plurality of vertically arranged thin plates 3 of ceramic material such as asbestos cement, the ends of the plates resting on horizontal, parallel supporting beams 5 and each element being confined between vertical beams 6 of the apparatus, the individual plates being spaced apart by interposed distance pieces 4. The distance pieces 4 may be secured to one or other of adjacent plates by means of an adhesive binding agent such as concrete, waterglass, synthethic resin or the like having a high resistance to corrosion by water or they may be formed with projecting heads (Fig. 4) which rest on the upper edges of the plates or they comprise bifurcated members resting astride each plate (Fig. 5). The plates may be formed with grooves or slots to slow down the speed of the cooling fluid as it flows downwardly over the plate surfaces.
