Abstract
919,118. Fractionating columns. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. May 18, 1961 [May 18, 1960], No. 17576/60. Class 55 (2). A fractionating column incorporates a tray unit comprising a plate of unperforated material having a flat upper surface and a plurality of dependent fins on the lower surface thereof, each said fin extending across the plate in a plane generally transverse to the direction of vapour flow over the plate when in use. The fins may be rectangular in shape, and may be normal or inclined to the plate. A series of the tray units may be mounted within a casing such that the upper surface of each tray is spaced from the lower surface of the next tray, the tray units being staggered so that a gap is left for fluid flow between the end of each unit and the casing, as in Fig. 2. Cross-flow of liquid over the plates may be promoted by placing slots along one edge of each tray unit in the direction of fluid flow, adjacent units having the slots on opposite sides. Such a construction may be employed in a condenserevaporator for producing liquid oxygen enriched air, as illustrated in Fig. 1, in which saturated air at elevated pressure is fed at 14 into column 10 which acts as a fractionating condenser. Nitrogen leaves the column at 15 and a liquid enriched in oxygen collects at the bottom of the column 10 and is fed through an expansion valve 16 to the top of the evaporator 11, in which it passes downwardly, being warmed and evaporated by heat exchange through the dividing wall 13, and finally leaves the base of the column as vapour at 17.
