Abstract

690,458. Measuring-tapes. MASTER RULE MANUFACTURING CO., Inc. Aug. 13, 1951 [Aug. 17,1950],No. 19034/51. Class 106 (ii). A steel tape 19 of concave-convex type graduated on one or both faces with a hook at its outer end is detachably secured at its inner end to the outer end of a coil spring 9 shaped as shown in Figs. 2, 3, its inner end being fixed to a mandrel in a housing. To prevent the spring retracting and being lost in the housing while attaching the tape to the spring by engaging the portion 11 in a slot 21 in the tape 19 the sill 6 forming the bottom of the housing opening 7 is provided with a dovetail slot 22, Fig. 5, as wide at its base as the portion 14 so that the shoulders 15 engage the outer face of the housing. The housing is formed of two mating'parts 1, 2, usually die-cast, comprising walls with right-angled peripheral flanges which may have lugs 3, 4 with pins 5 and co-operating recesses for accurately positioning the parts when assembled. The opening 7 is formed by cutting out the flanges, and central aligned posts held together by a screw form the mandrel to which the spring is secured. Pins 23, 24 move the tape 19 downwardly to pass freely through the spring 7 so that the joint between the tape 19 and spring 9 does not catch.
