Abstract

690,353. Bookbinding. SCHMIDT, R. G., and THOMAS. J. L. M. March 13, 1951. [Jan. 26, 1951] No. 6038/51. Class 16. A method of flexibly binding a block of sheets provided with a row of through perforations adjacent one of its edges consists in equipping the block with a flexible or pliable as well as weldable strip of a vinylic plastic material and effecting the binding by welding the said strip electronically to itself in such a manner that a continuous loop of the flexible or pliable material passes through each perforation round the adjacent edge of the block. The binding member 3, Fig. 1, is folded at 4 and welded to itself at 5 through each perforation 2 by an electronic welding machine the two electrodes of which consist of bars, at least one of which is provided with projections to press in the pliable material at the perforations. The electrodes may be formed to print advertisements or the like on the binding material during welding. The member 3 may extend along the block 1 to constitute side covers therefor, or separate covers, such as cardboard or leather, may be provided. The binding member may be cut along one longitudinal edge to form a series of tongues, which are then threaded through the perforations and their ends welded to the main body of the member. Such a binding member 7, Fig. 7, may be threaded through perforations in the block 1 and two side covers 6a, 6b, and the tongues welded to the body at 8b, the cover 6a then being swung through 360 degrees into its proper position.
