In cold pressure welding a metal member to a flange on a metal part by applying pressure across the flange and member, the flange rests on a tool which is provided or associated with means which by constraining the metal of a wall of the part to flow parallel to the direction of applied pressure prevents splaying of the metal of the part. In an embodiment a cylindrical part 1 formed from aluminium strip rolled around a mandrel and cold pressure welded by a seam weld 2 and interrupted welds 3, having a flange 4 turned over thereon is placed in a recessed tool 5. The recess may be level with the top of a radiused part on the flange 4. A disc 7 with a raised edge 8 is laid over the flange 4 and a cylindrical tool 9, of smaller diameter than the recess and having a projecting flange 11 with a flat strip like welding surface, is pressed down inside the part 1 to weld the flange 4 and disc 7. Flow of metal of the part 1 takes place parallel to the direction of applied pressure. A projecting portion 12 on the tool 9 limits and controls the reduction in thickness during welding. To complete a can, the top of the part 1 is flanged outwardly and a disc with fitting hole is welded thereto.
